Quick tips

  • Opt for caulk-type sealants over spray foam versions.

  • If foam sealing is required, go for pre-formed products, such as foam sealant tape.

  • For general purposes, choose acrylic, latex, or siliconized latex sealants with ultra-low VOCs (≤ 25 grams per liter).

  • Try to avoid silicone, polyurethane, and hybrid/modified polymer sealants.

  • When needing to use polyurethane or hybrid/modified polymer sealants, select versions free from phthalates.

  • When using silicone sealants, steer clear of those with organotin catalysts and instead choose those with titanium-based catalysts.

  • Avoid sealants advertised as mold or mildew-resistant unless they're essential.

  • If such products are used, stay away from those that have arsenic-based fungicides.

  • Always lean towards products that offer full ingredient transparency via Health Product Declarations (HPDs).
